Question 1
what would be the better of the two to mod? STI or WRX?... looking for cheaper money wise for performance upgrades and looking for which would have the bigger output when i am done modding? I want the hatch BTW. my current car is a 07 MS3please only Subbie guys anwser.
Answers
1) I don't know about performance, but I do know that you are gonna get CLOBBERED on insurance if you buy the WRX. The funky hood scoop and turbo really raise the WRX insurance rating sky high. If you want the style, buy the STI and put a WRX hood on it. Being the same car, it should fit perfectly. - DER ALTE FIRZ
2) Depends on which year you're looking at, the early WRXs were stuck with 2.0L engines while the STIs got 2.5Ls.
Other guy that posted is obviously clueless, the STI is the top of the Impreza line (outside of weird special editions the US never got). - Richard R
3) ya that guy is completely wrong lol... The WRX is the base model turbo version where the STi is the top of the line version.. The WRX has a solid engine as well as the STi.. The problem wuth the wrx is the tranny.. They are very weak compared to there bigger brother.. Alot of people take the WRX and swap over trannys and turbo... Either way the cars are both awesome - viperlp01
4) DER ALTE FIRZ please don't sling stupidity around here. If you had any clue as to why the insurance was high on these cars, you'd know that it was due to statistics and not appearance. If that was the case, you' see all these huge winged ricers with incredibly high insurance.
Onto the question. Honestly, if you are going all out in terms of performance, the WRX would be a bit cheaper than the STI. The reason I say this is because I'm assuming you would be changing the turbo, brakes, block, transmission and everything else in between which the STI has over the WRX.
If you are looking for a reasonable daily driver that you can autoX and take to occasional track days, then the STI will have a better output (since it already costs nearly 10k more). Of course, some people justify the WRX's lower performance because that extra 10k that would go to the STI would get you pretty far in mods. - JDMREX
5) sti all the way. - joe
6) depends on what you are looking for in performance. say you have a target goal of making 400hp. the sti will need less parts to get there vs the wrx, being cheaper to mod. but the car payment and insurance will be higher. the sti is the better of the two, on the older models. same with the new ones, though the new wrx's hold their own to the sti. - Jims sti
7) Depends on your goals. Yet the sti has better parts on it. Realize the 2.5 engines (ej255 or ej257) don't last much over 100k. Many built blocks don't last long at all. The polls say it all. - Dis

Question 2
What stock car is faster, the 2002 Subaru wrx or the 2002 1.8t Golf gti?... I just got a 2002 subaru wrx and this kid at my school is talking **** on me. He has a 02 1.8t golf gti. I know alot about cars and i could bet that my wrx could beat him in a race. The 0-60 time for my wrx is about 5.6 seconds and the gti is about 6.8 to 7 seconds. (researched online) also the top speed for the wrx is 145 mph and the gti's top speed is 140. Plus the subaru is all wheel drive. My wrx also has a hks ti turbo back exhaust, hks boost controller running about 17 psi with a top of the line cold air intake. unichip tuned and dynoed my car to make sure everything is running correct. The car is running 265-270 horse power. The gti is stock and has 180 hp. the only thing i heard about the gti is that it is very light. I hate people talking shit on wrx's and saying gti's are faster. If you would compare 1/4 mile times and 0-60 tims you would clearly know witch ones faster. my wrx is 5 speed and so is the gti. please give me your input and let me know what you think about what i just said. Dont be talking trash. thanks alot.
Alex
i forgot to tell you i have a sport sedan. Not a wagon.

1) I have driven both back to back. I would have to say the wrx was faster. After have had owned the wrx for over 170k miles it's pretty reliable. Yet the trans can be pretty weak in the 02 wrx if you upgrade. - Dis
2) Stock, the WRX will kick the GTI's butt.
With your current mods, the WRX will eat the GTI alive.
Challenge him to a track day. Its the quickest and probably the most fun way to resolve the issue without breaking the law. - Subaruman
3) You're wrx is faster STOCK, he may have told you his is stock but there are ways around the natural eye for a turbo car to raise power without you knowing. - 3000GT of Va
4) gti isnt that much lighter and with your stage 2 setup thats way out of your class. just launch it good because the gti has alot of low end engine torque. which we dont have. - Nick L
5) like i said before in the last question, take him to a track and race. - Jims sti
6) The actual numbers & math:
VW
1.8 litre turbo - 180 HP, 173 lb-ft torque, 2927 pounds, yielding 16.26 lb/HP
Subaru WRX - 2.0 litre turbo - 227 HP, 217 lb-ft, 3085 pounds(sedan) or 3165 pounds (Sport Wagon), yielding 13.59 lb/HP or 13.94 lb/HP
The published 0 to 60 time for the Subaru is 5.8 seconds. The VW does it in 6.5 seconds.
Both cars are equipped with five speed manual transmissions in this comparison. Clearly, the WRX is a stronger car on straight pavement, and not heavy compared to the VW when you factor in the weight of the all-wheel drive system.
On a road course, the lower center of gravity of the Subie and its AWD will give the VW fits in the turns. Neither of these are big performance cars, so comparing top speeds is trivial.
As built at the factories the VW really can't compare to the Subaru. Even the 238 pounds heavier Sport wagon bodied WRX has a better weight/power ratio than the VW. - designergenes

Question 3
Subaru impreza AWD increase power?... hi
im getting a 1997 subaru impreza rx ( awd )
they are factory at 88kw which is 118 hp
i wanna up grade it to about 150hp without installing a turbo
what can i do and what would the cost be around
thanks
with out blowing the motor
but thanks sonny x[)

1) nitrous - Sonny
2) you could get it chipped. but im not sure how much this will cost. - carl
3) You can do a cold air intake. That can be up to 200$. Also geetting an exhaust system running up to 500$. Also you can get a computer chip installed. Brings out some horsepower that's factory tuned down. I'm not sure how much those are. Just look it up on some performance parts website or something. - Matt O
4) I agree with matt. cheapest way to bolt on horsepower is cold air intake, headers, cat-back exhaust and maybe a high flow cat converter. - Andrew
5) all the bolt ons may add 20hp, nitrous will destroy the engine. the cheapest way for you would be to trade the car in and get a newer rs. those have 170hp. - Jims sti
6) You will need to have some head work done and increase compression with at least some new pistons to reach that kind of power without turbocharging. I love Subaru but if this is a matter of license restrictions, maybe there are some better cars that meet your power desires. - I <3 my Suby.

Question 4
Which subaru should I get? Impreza WRX or Legacy GT?... I am going to get a subaru. But i still need some help on deciding which car should i go for. Impreza WRX or Legacy GT?
Answers
1) My Impreza works like a charm. Her name is Wanda and she´s pretty much a bada** - A lady
2) Just go with whichever one YOU like best. You are the one paying for it and have to live with it. Both are excellent cars. - CT53
3) Go out nd drive them both. Basically the WRX is a smaller car but that makes it a little more tossable. Power comes on differently too. The WRX is lighter and geared better for acceleration bu the Legacy has great power too. It just comes on more smoothly. You may check insurance too. The Legacy could be cheaper. - I <3 my Suby.
4) if you get the wrx, you can always make it look like a sti later on. that's what i'm doing. haha and also wrx you get the turbo so it's going to be faster. and they're pretty much equally fuel consuming. although you might save a little bit on insurance. but not much........ - TRIAD
5) The Impreza is alot more fun - I really miss mine :o( - Stephen
